5 Simple Ways to Get Better at Prayer

1 min read

1. Be honest.

God wants your unbridled honesty. What you hide from Him, you hide from healing. How can He dig up the root if you pretending the weed isn’t there? What you really feel cannot offend an omniscient God.

2. Ask God what He wants.

If you don’t know what to be honest about, ask God. Ask God what you should ask Him. Every time God asks us a question, it’s not because He doesn’t know the answer, but so He can create space for us to confess.

3. Study what Jesus said.

Jesus taught us how to pray. Read Matthew 6:5-13. If you’re wondering what this passage means practically, check out my study guide on how to pray.

4. Fast.

When we fast from food we weaken the flesh (our desires) and thus strengthen the Spirit (God’s desires). Fasting challenges our daily routine and pushes us to rely on God’s faithfulness.

5. Pray in tongues.

A controversial one, I know. All I will say is: I used to be a skeptic. I like logic. I like practicality. Speaking in tongues is something we cannot understand strictly through study. You just have to try it. It feels weird and foolish and that’s the point.
